Literacy Room at the Maddux

Building a safe and welcoming environment for youth to develop literacy skills, foster a love of reading, and build meaningful connections with family and neighbors.

Why a Literacy Room?

Many children in our community face barriers that make it harder to succeed in school, including limited access to academic support, quiet study spaces, mentorship, and culturally relevant books. The Literacy Room addresses these inequities by offering:

  • A quiet, resource-rich learning environment that supports focused reading and homework completion.

  • One-on-one and small-group literacy support led by trained volunteers.

  • Intergenerational connection, bringing together resident volunteers, community partners, and young learners.

  • A nurturing, empowering space that builds curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
